The landmine is a piece of equipment that is ideal in a home gym setting. Basically this is a metal that has a plate that will connect to something that won’t move (the wall, a squat rack, a bench, etc.). The other end has a sleeve that allows you to insert one end of a barbell into it. Below is an image of the one I have in my garage gym.
If you have a landmine and a barbell then there are a variety of exercises that you can do. These include:
- T-bar Rows
- One arm t-bar rows
- Romanian deadlifts
- Viking presses (see the image below)
- One arm shoulder presses
- Squats done holding the front of the barbell
- Core work using the barbell
With a good landmine, there are several things to keep in mind. First, you will need a barbell. Second, different types of handles are helpful for different exercises but they aren’t required. Third, you need to be able to secure the landmine to something that won’t move. Some people secure it to a all or the floor, I don’t like that both because of the holes I’d be putting in the wall and floor as well as the lack of flexibility that this allows. Instead I secure it to a bench and then weigh the bench down with weight plates or kettlebells to make sure it doesn’t move!
The landmine that I use (pictured above) is a Day 1 Fitness landmine. It fits Olympic and standard barbells, can be secured to a piece of equipment or the wall or the floor. It has been very flexible and durable.
